Agents for Wheaton Interstate Moving

Summit Moving and Storage was founded in October of 1956 by a driver turned agent, William Ault and his wife, Anna T. Ault. Mr. Ault started Summit with one truck, a warehouse/office totaling 2,000 sq. ft., and the employment of both his sons - Charles R. Ault in 1958 and Richard W. Ault in 1959. For most of that time, Summit Moving and Storage was located at 165 West Exchange Street, Akron, Ohio.

By 1960 Summit Moving and Storage displayed the new colors – brown and tan – of Republic Van Lines and moved to a new location at 146 Kelly Avenue, Akron, Ohio. The growing company experienced many changes and additions. The new warehouse and office totaled 6,000 sq. ft., a fleet of 4 trucks, and an established name in the Akron area. The relationship with Republic Van Lines lasted until February 1975.

In 1969 Summit Moving and Storage moved to its current location at 885 East Tallmadge Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44310. Father and sons built the warehouse and offices to accommodate their expanding moving and storage business. The custom-built warehouse is one of a kind in the Summit County area, specifically designed to be fireproof (all concrete) and government approved for the highest standards put forth by the military.

In January 1975, while completing some paperwork in the office, Mr. Charles Ault heard a light knocking on the counter. He noticed a distinguished elderly gentleman at the counter. “May I help you”, said Mr. Ault. The gentleman replied, “Yes, my name is Ernie Wheaton, president of Wheaton Van Lines, and I want to talk to you.” Needless to say, it was not long after that visit with Mr. Wheaton that Summit Moving and Storage found itself flying the Wheaton flag. Meanwhile, one more change was necessary to bring the picture up-to-date.

Summit Moving and Storage, agents for Wheaton World Wide Moving, Inc. had expanded their warehouse facilities in 1987 to 25,000 sq. ft. and completed a new office addition to accommodate their growing customer base. The successful moving and storage business was turned over to Mr. Ault's sons, Charles and Richard in 1978. Currently, Summit’s fleet has expanded to 19 vans and trucks servicing the greater Akron area as well as globally. Over the years, the Ault brothers, various family members, and staff have kept alive the dream started by one man, William Ault. Now, Mr. Ault’s grandson, Bill, is managing the business.
